welcome to "early start." i'm poppy harlow. >> and i'm john berman. i had syracuse, by the way. a staggering number. 7,000 patients getting a startling and probably tear tying news this morning. they may have been exposed to hiv and hepatitis by their dentist. dr. scott harrington and his tulsa practice a menace to health. some of the investigators who checked out his office left physically sick. this is just shocking, ed lavandera. >> reporter: the allegations leveled here in the state of oklahoma by health officials against the man who runs the dental practice behind me is staggering. tulsa health officials say the sanitation conditions inside this building where dr. scott harrington works as an oral

surgeon were horrifying. >> when we left, the investigators were physically sick. and i have seen a lot of bad stuff over the years. >> reporter: the health officials say as many a 7,000 patients in the last six years might have been exposed to hiv as well as hepatitis b and c. health officials say he treated a higher prop lags of patients with those illnesses. when investigators inspected the tools and equipment in the office, what they discovered was disturbing and unsanitary. >> the instruments that came out of the autoclave were horrible. they had rust on them. >> reporter: at least one patient was infected by hepatitis c from treatments in the office. a sense of up ease is spreading. patients are receiving letters, urging them to get tested.

>> the magnitude and the unknown length of time that the practices may have occurred have prompted public health to begin systematic notification of dr. harrington's patients and recommend testing for hiv, hepatitis b, and hepatitis c viruses. as many persons who may be inverdicted with these blood-borne viruses may be infected for years without signs of illness. >> reporter: state health officials say dr. harrington voluntarily stopped practice a few weeks ago after the investigations began. he is 63 years old. he started practicing more than 35 years ago. it's not clear if the closure is permanent or temporary. this is the message callers to his office hear now. >> you have reached the office of dr. scott harrington.

the office is currently closed. >> reporter: and john, those 7,000 patients -- if they haven't received the letters already, they'll get them shortly. free test willing be offered by state health officials beginning on saturday. >> i would hope it's free. ed lavandera, thank you so much. developing story out of pakistan this morning. a suicide bomber blew himself up less than half a mile from the u.s. consulate in peshawar. the bomber rho eer rode a motor to a security check point and detonated about 20 pounds of exmoosives on his body. a new development with knot korea aches stance against the united states. rockets have been ordered to be put on standby, ready to fire at u.s. targets in the pacific.

yesterday. >> i'll tell you that when the health department investigators, when we left, we were physically kind of sick. that's how bad. and i have seen a lot of bad stuff over the years. the instruments that came out of the autoclave were horrible. i wouldn't let my nephews play with them out in the dirt. i mean, they were horrible. >> reporter: some of the highlights that health officials have found here at the practice of dr. scott harrington. rusted and unsterilized equipment. not sterile gauze pads used. open viles of medications found in there as well as assistants not properly qualified to do the work they were doing inside the dental practice. the allegations being leveled against this doctor shocking and disturbing to say the least. >> we know thousands of patients are now going to or are in the process of undergoing tests to see if they have been infected or not. that's the most important thing while we wait to hear from them,

have we had any response from the dentist? on top of that, what charges could he face? >> reporter: well, we have made attempts to reach the doctor, there's a -- the only -- the voice recording message at the practice here says that the office is closed. we have tried to reach out to his attorney, so far, no response. health officials say that no criminal charges have been filed yet. but that they are in contact with the district attorney's office here in tulsa. maybe depending on the results here for the tests of all those patients, that could change that. we'll have to wait and see. >> ed lavandera, thank you. >> 33 minutes after the hour. the father of a former u.s. soldier charged with conspiring with all al qaeda in iraq says his son is no terrorist. his son, eric harroun is a hero, says his father. he was arrested at dulles

about 9 cents a gallon. newly released documents show that the shooter in the newtown massacre showed up at sandy hook elementary school practically armed for war. he had ten magazines for his assault weapon, two handguns and a shotgun. in less than five minutes, he fired off 154 rounds, killing 20 children and six adults. >> just having those types of magazines, having those types of weapons out there, that are available to the average civilian, not law enforcement, not the military is a problem we don't know in whose hands they're going to be. >> we also know what investigators found in the home. more than 1600 rounds of am phew in addition, three samurai swords inside the lan za home, where adam lanza also shot his mother to death. a zoo keeper in canada has

christian calendar. for catholics today, it's the first good friday with a new pope who does things his own way. this holy week has already had its own first. pope francis presiding over international events today. yesterday, he broke with tradition again. he washed the feet of two women. one of them was a muslim. this has never been done before. what does this tell us about the pope? >> never been done before by a pope. he's washed the feet of women back in argentina. fact is, this is the first time we have seen this. i think one more piece of evidence that the pope is going to do things completely differently from his predecessors. he told us journalists about a week ago that basically, there's nothing more he would like to see than a poor church in the service of the poor.

he is constantly, and the first few days of his reign here, here's repeated the idea that clergy should get out, get out, leaving the church and getting out into the street where is the people are. i think we'll see quite a different papacy from the regal monarc monarchy-style papacy we have seen in the past. >> the vatican wanted a new pope in place for this easter week. good friday celebrations start today. what is on the agenda for pope francis? do you think we'll see more surprises as the weekend continues? >> i think so. this afternoon, a traditional ceremony. he starts off at st. peter's basilica. reads the story of christ's passion, the suffering, death, and resurrection. he'll do it in the basilica. he'll travel to the coliseum. a traditional spot for the popes to observe the stations of the

i'm poppy harlowe. >> i'm john berman. 6:00 a.m. in the east. shocking news. some 7,000 patients getting expd hepatitis by their dentist in oklahoma. officials there calling dr. scott harrington and his tulsa practice both a menace to public health. we're told some of the investigators who inspected his office were physically sickened by what they found. ed lavandera is live in tulsa this morning outside harrington's dental office. good morning, ed. >> good morning, john. well you know it must be bad when health investigators who do this kind of work for a living inspecting dental clinics are the ones saying they were floored by what they found. tulsa health officials say the sanitation conditions inside this building where dr. scott harrington works as an oral surgeon were horrifying. >> i will tell you that when the health department investigators, when we left, we were just physically kind of sick. i mean that's just how bad --

and i've seen a lot of bad stuff over the years. >> reporter: those health officials say that as many as 7,000 patients in the last six years might have been exposed to hiv, as well as hepatitis-b and c. health officials say dr. harrington treated a higher population of patients with those illnesses. but when investigators started inspecting the dental tools and equipment in the office, in the last two weeks, what they discovered was disturbing, and extremely unsanitary. >> the instruments that came out of the autoclave were horrible. i wouldn't let my nephew play with them out in the dirt. i mean, they were horrible. they had rust on them. >> reporter: so far health officials believe at least one patient was infected with hepatitis-c from treatments in this office. the news has sparked a nerve-wracking sense of unease. patients are receiving letters urging them to get tested. >> the magnitude of these infractions in clinical practices, and the unknown length of time that the practices may have occurred have

prompted public health to begin systematic notification of doctor harrington's patients, and recommend testing for hiv, hepatitis-b and hepatitis-c viruses, as many persons who may be infected with these blood-borne viruses may be infected for years without experiencing any signs of illness. >> reporter: state health officials say dr. harrington voluntarily stopped practicing after the investigation of health and safety law violations started a few weeks ago. harrington is 64 years old, a veteran oral surgeon, who started practicing more than 35 years ago. but it's not clear if the closure is permanent or temporary. we haven't been able to reach dr. harrington yet, and this is the message callers to his office hear now. >> you have reached the office of dr. scott harrington. the office is currently closed. >> reporter: now those 7,000 patients will be receiving free

testing from health officials here in the state of oklahoma. that testing begins tomorrow, and, john, so far, no criminal charges filed against the dentist. but health officials say they are in contact with the district attorney's office here in tulsa, oklahoma. john? >> all right, ed lavandera. the numbers are staggering. 7,000 possible patients. all right, ed, thanks to you. a developing story this morning in pakistan. a suicide bomber blew himself up less than half a mile from the u.s. consulate in person war ra. that's right near the afghan border and hospital officials say at least six people were killed in that attack, another dozen hurt. police say the bomber rode a motor bike up to a security checkpoint then detonated about 20 pounds of explosives that he was wearing. new developments in north korea's increasingly aggressive stance against the united states. state media reports leader kim jong-un has ordered that rockets be put on standby ready to be fired at u.s. targets in the pacific. north korea issued this latest threat after the u.s. confirmed

that it has b-2 stealth bombers over south korea as part of joint military exercises. the north considers those exercises a threat of war by the united states. and the father of a former u.s. soldier now charged with conspiring with al qaeda in iraq as he fought in syria says that his son is no terrorist. in fact, he says that his son eric harroun is a hero for fighting alongside syria's opposition. the fbi arrested harroun on tuesday near dulles airport in virginia. they charged him with conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction outside of the united states, specifically a rocket-propelled grenade. what a run it has been for the s&p 500. yesterday's closing bell the index's 500 large u.s. companies put an exclamation point on a really impressive four-year rally. finishing up six points to close at an all-time record high 1569. the s&p 500 is up 10% in the first quarter of 2013. it has now erased all the losses

from the financial crisis back in 2008. that's some good news. >> good news for investors. and this is sort of a gut check. what would you do in this scenario? check out this grocery store clerk in virginia, turning the tables on an armed robber. the suspect entered the store with his weapon raised. the clerk rushed in and took the shotgun right out of his hands and the thief just ran away on foot. no one was injured. totally brave. >> i'm not sure i would do that. >> i don't think i would. i would duck. >> good for him. so, was hans solo at the controls here? the soyuz spacecraft managed to get to the international space station in just under six hours. i don't know how that compares. the trip normally takes two days. nasa says equipment and computer software upgrades helped speed up this trip. soyuz orbited four times before docking. it usually orbits 16 times. travel time was about the same as los angeles to honolulu. flying from l.a. to honolulu. a pretty quick flight. two russians and one american

will be at the space station until september. >> and only two top seeds remaining among the top 12 teams left standing in the ncaa men's championship basketball tournament. fourth seed syracuse knocking off top seed indiana 61-50 last night. the orange racing to an 1-point first half lead over the outclassed hoosiers. and never looking back. that sets up an elite eight match-up on saturday between syracuse and its big east rival marquette. which easily handled number two seed miami 71-61 last night. >> also advancing last night, number two seed ohio state with a 73-70 win over arizona. wichita state was over la salle 72-58. on the schedule tonight, some phenomenal games. top seed louisville taking on oregon. then it's michigan against kansas. michigan state/duke. that's a huge one. and then the one everyone is talking about, 15 seed florida gulf coast university, the eagles from dunk city, looking to keep the dream alive against. florida gators.

this has been in the works for some time. perhaps 100 years. i want to point out the sign over my shoulder, it's a sign warning people to stay back, that this is still an active land slide area, and it is still on the move and style frightening to people who live here. the view is breathtaking until you look closer. the earth is still tumbling down hundreds of feet. the grass of this backyard dangling on the edge above an impromptu cliffside that took out one house and cut off 17 others. daniel garcia lives -- or lived -- here. his house tagged yellow means it's possible it could go tumbling. >> kind seems like the best interest to go. >> reporter: so you want to get out of here? >> i wouldn't -- i'd rather not but the situation kind of dictates. >> reporter: this large landslide in washington state is a 1 in 100 or 200 year event

says geologist harry swanson. >> just beyond the cliff here. so the entire road, this whole section here, about 600, 00 feet of it has been completely rotated. >> reporter: swanson said scientists knew this was coming but couldn't predict exactly when. >> when you get lots of water, the water pressure can push the sand grains apart, and then there's no cohesion and the stuff moves. >> reporter: and is this an example of man versus nature? have we built on stuff we just didn't understand? >> yes, absolutely. back in the 1930s and '40s when they were plotting this in 1950s, even the 1960s, people weren't thinking about this. >> reporter: resident karen mccoy certainly wasn't when she moved in a few months ago. >> i thought of it as like a huge, big huge wave crashing against the cement wall. and it was just really strong. >> reporter: it cut off the main road to her house. finally climbed a trail at night to get her cat. >> she's a little freaked out right now. it's okay.

there's just a lot of anxiety about what's going to happen. will i be able to move back home? >> reporter: daniel garcia isn't anxious. he's made his choice. the man who moved in to this house for the view is now leaving because he has too much of one. not everyone is leaving this area. we were at a meeting last night where residents said that they were going to stay, some say they just love it. others are stuck here. they don't have the properties insured for this sort of disaster and they can't exactly sell their property at this point. and poppy, if you're wondering exactly how many other houses are in immediate risk, the state says one is in significant risk. there are four at a moderate risk level. the rest probably safe for now. >> all right. we're hoping for the best for all of them. especially that one house on the precipice. kyung la live for us on whidbey island. >> let's bring you up to date. there is an hiv and hepatitis scare developing right now in oklahoma. 7,000 patients being informed

they may have been exposed to these diseases by tulsa dentist scott harrington. investigators are calling harrington a menace to public health, claiming he used rusted, unsterilized equipment. also reused needles. this morning we know the cause of death of a maryland woman aboard a royal caribbean cruise ship last weekend. the fbi reports that she had heart disease. an autopsy did find a cut on the 64-year-old woman's head but it likely occurred when she fell. initially the agency had classified her death as suspicious. president obama turning up the pressure on congress for tougher gun laws. he met at the white house yesterday with people touched by gun violence, including families from newtown, connecticut. the president this is the moment to act, and that the nation has cried enough over violent episodes like the sandy hook elementary school massacre. >> and the entire country was shocked. the entire country pledged we would do something about it and that this time would be different.

shame on us if we've forgotten. >> documents released yesterday showed adam lanza showed up practically armed for war, with high powered weapons, and a shut gun. he killed 20 children and six adults in less than five minutes. black smoke seen for miles around las vegas, coming from the key largo casino. more than 100 firefighters had to try to get it under control. a couple of them were hurt. nothing too serious, though, and no word yet on how this blaze broke out. the key largo has not seen any action in eight years. it was supposed to be torn down to make way for condos. those plans fell through as the real estate bubble burst. going on solar power. the solar impulse jet making its debut in the united states. the swiss-made jet was reassembled in the san francisco bay area, unveiled yesterday. the plane will go on test flights leading up to its coast-to-coast five-city tour in may. it's packed with some pretty

welcome back. a new record high for the s&p 500 but investors will have to wait until monday for a shot at more gains. the market closed today in honor of good friday. our alison kosik januarys us bright and early this morning. great numbers for people in the market. historic quarterly performance, too. >> exactly. you look at tdow and s&p 500 sig at record highs. the s&p 500 is a broader measure of the stock market, because it includes 500 stocks, not just 30 that are in the dow. so that record high, 1569, that is a little more impressive. and the market did it coincidentally on the last day of the first quarter yesterday. look at these gains. look at these returns. in just the past three months, the dow is up 11%. you know, the s&p 500 up 10%. the nasdaq is higher.

of course, there are winners in this gain that helped push these major averages higher. the first, the best performing stock during the quarter, netflix. its shares more than doubled, up 104% since the beginning of the year. investors seem to like that the company still has room to grow, despite plenty of missteps over the last couple of years. still the stock has recovered quite a bit. best buy shares up 87% in the quarter. hewlett-packard even up 68%. the funny thing is, both best buy, hewlett packrd, they're struggling. they're having a hard time. they're trying to go through this turnaround right now. one of the big losers, was apollo group. that company owns and operates the university of phoenix. you see all the commercials. its stock was down 16%. jcpenney, of course, jcpenney, that company is in the middle of a turnaround but investors are not buying its makeover plan. the stock lost 23% of its value just over the quarter. it's ceo ron johnson came from apple. he got in there, he tried a

pricing strategy, pretty much killed sales. and customers just didn't like it. they ran for the exits. now he's saying -- now he's bringing back the old pricing because he realized, take care of the customers who like to feel like they're getting promotions and discounts and they want to bring their coupons. he's going to bring this back, see if it works. investors aren't buying it at this point. >> if your stock's not rising in this environment you're in big trouble. >> the one thing, gas prices, they keep falling, surprise surprise. and some experts are saying prices may not even go much higher for the rest of the year. aaa says the national average for a gallon of regular dropped to $3.64 overnight. that's 28 cents below this time last year. usually prices rise in the spring ahead of the summer driving season. i'd say enjoy it while you can. >> it matters to everyone. we talk about the stock market but almost half of americans don't have a penny in the market. a lot of them have cars. >> gas prices matter. >> it is a reality check for one

years. >> i know that 7,000 people are receiving these letters, or calls to go get tested for these very serious diseases. do we have any sense of how many may have been impacted? any initial reading on that? or is it too early? and also, ed, any idea what charges this dentist may face? >> let me cover the first part of that. so far there's only one patient that has -- health officials say has been -- has contracted the hepatitis virus. that is the one person that they know about. the testing, the free testing begins tomorrow, so it might take some time to get the full scope of what has happened here. but they're urging the 7,000 people who will be getting these letters, this is people who've been here within the last six years, they're being urged to get that testing and that will begin tomorrow. and as far as criminal charges, none have been filed so far, poppy, but health officials say they are in contact with the district attorney's office here in the tulsa, oklahoma, area.

so i think depending on how that testing comes back, when they get a better understanding of the full scope and magnitude of all of this, you know, i think that will have a big weight on what kind of criminal charges we might see in the future. >> and also have to be able to directly tie the contraction of those diseases to visits to this office. ed lavandera, thank you very much. new this morning, prosecutors in the aurora movie theater mass shooting case say they are extremely unlikely to accept a guilty plea from suspect james holmes in order to take the death penalty off the table. prosecutors say they're still seeking specific access to information that allows them to fully assess holmes and his alleged actions in order to get a just outcome. they also suggest that the defense isn't acting in good faith by disclosing the offer in a public filing. new this morning, the obama administration is moving to require cleaner gasoline blends, in vehicles that emit less pollution. reports say the epa is set to

announce new rules at some point today and they would require reducing the amount of sulfur in gasoline. also they'd require a fleet of cleaner vehicles to hit the road by 2017. the oil industry claims the new rules could translate into a hike in gas prices. they're saying up to nine cents per gallon. a zookeeper in canada lucky to be alive this morning, surviving an attack by a siberian tiger. he was cleaning the tiger pen yesterday morning when he was set upon by a female siberian. the animals are supposed to be kept in a separate enclosure wlefr their pen is cleaned. an investigation is under way to determine why the tiger was there. the zookeeper was seriously wounded. he's in the hospital right now. in stable condition. the past catching up to a $338 million powerball winner pedro quezada. turns out he owes child support going back to 2009. but lucky for him, his winnings will more than cover what he owes. he owes $29,000. he is expected -- it's expected that that will be paid out of

the estate before his lottery wings are released. and questions aud today has five children ranging from 5 to 23 years old. he has said some of his children live in north carolina. >> here's what's trending this morning. be careful what you wish for. just months after recreational marijuana use became legal in colorado and washington lawmakers from both states are considering taxing it and getting some of that green into state coffers. one rocky mountain congressman estimates the taxes could bring inasmuch as $100 million in potential revenue for his state alone. medical marijuana use could take a hit in colorado. these taxes are one of the big reasons why these states push for it. >> absolutely. >> might be one of the only reasons. >> absolutely. breaking news this morning. you're wondering what's going on with justin bieber lately? we have your biebs update. you probably know justin bieber has recently generated some questionable headlines, reckless driving, paparazzi fights, now the 19-year-old is under investigation by the l.a. county sheriff's department for reportedly spitting on his

huntsville, alabama. police telling our affiliate the pickup was going the wrong way on an overpass when it hit two cars. the driver lost control. the truck ended up crashing over the guardrail and dangling on the edge. rescue crews were able to get the driver pinned inside. two people were seriously injured. one with life threatening injuries. two strangers turned into good samaritans when they teamed up to take down a robber. look at this video. security video from a drugstore in mesa, arizona. a suspect demanding cash from the cashier. he got his cash but he didn't get away. two customers, jacob and justin, took the guy down. >> threw my stuff down and told him no. and he decided to try and get past me. my wife works as a cashier. and, you know, she was getting robbed i wish would step in for her. so. >> it's strange. it's been my neighborhood, and i'm glad i could help. >> pretty awesome that their gut instinct was to jump in and help. the guy had a gun.

welcome back to "early start," everyone. president obama is turning up the heat on congress to pass stricter gun control laws. at the white house yesterday with supporters of new legislation he says the nation has cried enough over violent episodes like the sandy hook elementary school massacre, declaring this is the moment to

act. but, it is increasingly doubtful the president will get all the provisions he wants. here's dan lothian. >> reporter: more than 100 days after the mass shootings in newtown, connecticut, president obama sensed his support for stricter gun laws slipping. >> this is our best chance in more than a decade to take commonsense steps that will save lives. >> reporter: while surrounded by mothers touched by gun violence, the president made an emotional appeal, invoking the memory of newtown massacre victims to shame congress to act. >> the entire country was shocked. the entire country pledged we would do something about it and that this time would be different. shame on us if we've forgotten. i haven't forgotten those kids. shame on us if we've forgotten. >> reporter: one poll shows support for tougher gun laws dropping 10 points to 47%, from

57% in december. and there's tough opposition to the president's sweeping measures. what the senate will be taking up next month lacks some key components the president pushed for. universal background checks, and a ban on some high-capacity magazines. in addition, four gop senators, including florida's marco rubio, say they'll block any legislation that puts more restrictions on gun owners. in a statement rubio said he intended to, quote, oppose any legislation that would infringe on the american people's constitutional right to bear arms. but the president is getting support from groups like mayors against illegal guns. out with this new ad featuring relatives of the sandy hook victims. >> she just wanted to teach little kids. and that was her goal. she died doing it. >> reporter: dan lothian, cnn, the white house. >> she seems very upset about it. >> welcome back, everyone. that was dan lothian covering

we have a story right now about the unlikeliest and furriest family around. meet glat us. gladys is a gorilla. and the adorable 2-month-old was rejected by her mother in texas. so she was moved to the cincinnati zoo where she's being raised by a rotating group of human surrogates until a gorilla assumes the role of surrogate mother. gladys and the primate team leader rob evans are here this morning. gladys you are the best, prettiest guest we've ever had here on "early start." thank you so much for joining us this morning. so, rod, explain -- >> we're happy to be here. >> i assume that gladys can't answer my question. how did gladys end up in your care? >> well, you know, she was born at the gladys porter zoo, hence

the name gladys. and her mother was a first-time mom and unfortunately didn't take care of her from birth. that happens sometimes because gorillas have to learn a lot of skills they need to know like maternal care. the gladys zoo did an excellent job taking care of her themselves but didn't have any options for a surrogate mom there because all their other gorillas had babies themselves. so we all got together, cincinnati, gladys porter, the gorilla species survival plan which manages gorillas in north america, looked for the best option, and it was to come to cincinnati to be with some of our experienced mothers. >> you know what i think is so interesting you've got ten humans acting as a surrogate mother to gladys, and they actually wear sort of furry vests over black uniforms, if you will, right, to feel like much like normal as possible? >> like i'm wearing here today. yeah, we try and make every -- we try and act like gorillas to gladys. we're just holding her temporarily. we're keeping her temporarily until we can get her in with a

real gorilla as quickly as possible. before we get to that point we have to gorilla-fy her a little bit. we try to do everything we can to make things like a gorilla mom would be, like a furry vest or the black scrubs to look like the dark gorilla skin. she lives in the same areas with the gorillas. we make gorilla vocalizations to gladys. and we have a whole big team taking care of her 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. so, yeah, it takes a really good team effort to take care of gladys. >> the gorilla vest looks terrific on you. i guess the question is, is there a possibility that it won't be enough? that by the time you're done gladys will be so accustomed to hume humans that she won't take to the actual gorilla mom? >> that's actually a very good question. but fortunately zoos have gotten together years ago and put together a comprehensive protocol on how to approach gorilla reintroduction so we know from our collective experience that as long as we try and focus on getting gladys
